So Charles, just for you, here goes :)

This year has been one tumultuous year for me. I have been on quite a rollercoaster since entering my last year of secondary schooling. I was thinking that this year would be an unpredictable year, but not much would change. I was soon proved wrong about that thought. After going through an emotional January and February, March came rolling along, and that was when things started to go off the rails.

From memory, I started to go to the State Library of Victoria more often to concentrate on my studies, given that I was unable to do as much at home. Through this often daily routine of mine, I got to meet an array of people, who soon after would become friends. They were usually the students from Melbourne High School - the ‘brother’ school of mine. Jack is a friend of mine who I met near the end of last year out through other friends of ours. One day, nearing the end of Term One, he had invited me to go to karaoke with his friends - seeing as he knew I love karaoke. I of course, attended and upon entering the room, there was at least 10 Melbourne High boys and the same amount of girls who were from different schools - namely Presbytarian Ladies’ College (PLC). I had proceeded to sit myself amongst all of these people and found myself sitting next to my train buddy, and Melbourne High student, Dominic. On the other side, was a person who I had not met before. Being the outgoing and arguably friendly person that I am, I introduced myself to him, and found out that his name was Charles Xuan. I spent several more hours in that cramped room, belting out some songs whilst having a lot of fun. The day ended and we all proceeded on our respective ways home. Little did I know that some weeks later (after the Easter holidays), would I meet this Charles Xuan again.

Early into Term Two, I once again, lapsed into my routine of going to the State Library in an attempt to do my schoolwork. Needless to say, I did do some work, but during those days where I would sit myself down to study with whichever friends I could find, I met Charles again. Although I don’t remember what happened exactly, it started to become a reoccuring occurance. (I think my vocabulary is beginning to succumb to nothing at the moment). The days turned into weeks, and I was beginning to see my now friend, Charles more often. I must say, he is a ridiculously nice person and has an infectious laugh and smile. Along with his other friends from Melbourne High, we all began to be our own little study group where we would all study together after school from Monday to Friday.

After getting to know each other a little more, I found out that Charles had completed Accounting last year, while in year 11. Myself, currently completing Accounting, I asked for his help in the weeks leading up to my mid-year examination. He of course, helped me. The examination neared and his help was gradually becoming a state of knowledge in my mind. The day of the examination came, I sat it, and came out relatively happy and relieved. I felt like I owed him a lot for his help. As well as his help for Accounting, he had given me a lot of moral support for my stresses and worries in regards to my SACs at school. He reassured me and helped me where he could. I felt so grateful to him and his support.

As any senior school student would know, the formal is a big event on the calendar. After finding out that Charles did not have a date to his formal, but was looking for one, I proceeded to help him on his quest to find a suitable partner. After some less than successful attempts - including a quick four-word question course - he had ineffectively given up. He didn’t want to go to his formal alone as he wanted to have company, but didn’t know who to ask. He had indirectly asked a female friend from PLC, but she was unable to attend. After another several failed attempts, he asked me. The manner in which he asked me was of a very odd but funny nature. In effect, he had only said a statement to me, but he followed that statement with: “that was a question btw [by the way]”. After some long periods of laughter and explaining, I agreed and was now his formal partner. Over the past couple of days namely, we have been discussing what colour dress and tie was wanted by him, as well as an array of other things that have become quite humourous whilst in discussion. His knowledge of what colour a girl should or shouldn’t wear never ceases to amaze me.

Through my many encounters with my friend Charles, I have found out a lot about him. Without revealing too much, I know that: he has a younger sister who he knows very little about, receives youth allowance which everyone is jealous of, has an intense love of magic cards, and instinctively likes to use the typed emoticon of ‘xD’ to allow for some emotion in his words. He also doesn’t hug people, but will unwillingly hug me if necessary, and he never starts the conversations on Windows Live Messenger - although he has started a conversation only twice to myself before.

There are many more things I could tell you about Charles, but as you should have read in the earlier part of this blog, I was challenged to write an essay about my dearest friend, Charles Xuan. I would like to think that I have succeeded in this challenge that he had set for me. I have written “a whole essay” with an “intro, paragraphs with quotes and conclusion”. I hope our friendship becomes a stronger one and that we will have many more hilarious conversations in the future. Thank you for everything you have done, Charles.
